The novel begins when Jack Reacher, walking through Chicago, notices a woman in distress coming out of a laundromat. He offers to help her, but shortly afterward he and the woman — who introduces herself as Holly Johnson, an FBI agent — are kidnapped and forced into a vehicle. From that moment on, Reacher finds himself entangled in a very dangerous game involving paramilitary groups and dark conspiracies.
