Ferrara, inverno 1349. Un’inquietante processione di gente incappucciata si aggira nelle selve vicino alla città, terrorizzando chiunque abbia la sfortuna d’imbattervisi. E mentre si diffondono voci su riti satanici e segni dell’apocalisse, c’è chi scorge in quelle apparizioni un astuto complotto. Tra loro anche l’impavido cavaliere Maynard de Rocheblanche che, con l’appoggio della Santa Inquisizione, intraprende un’indagine per cercare di far luce sulla verità. L’impresa si rivelerà tuttavia più difficile del previsto, perché sono molti i prelati più interessati ai suoi segreti che a risolvere il caso. Maynard è infatti l’unico custode del mistero più grande della cristianità, la leggendaria reliquia attribuita a Gesù, il Lapis exilii. E questa volta, privato dell’appoggio dell’abate di Pomposa, potrà fare affidamento solo sulla sorella, la monaca Eudeline, per difendere se stesso e i propri amici e cercare di svelare l’intrigo che lo coinvolge.

Ferrara, winter of 1349. A disturbing procession of hooded people roams the woods near the city, terrifying anyone unlucky enough to encounter them. As rumors of satanic rituals and signs of the apocalypse spread, some see in these apparitions a cunning plot. Among them is the fearless knight Maynard de Rocheblanche who, with the support of the Holy Inquisition, undertakes an investigation to try to uncover the truth. However, the task will prove more difficult than expected, as many prelates are more interested in his secrets than in solving the case. Maynard is, in fact, the sole keeper of the greatest mystery of Christianity, the legendary relic attributed to Jesus, the Lapis exilii. And this time, deprived of the support of the abbot of Pomposa, he will have to rely only on his sister, the nun Eudeline, to defend himself and his friends and to try to unravel the intrigue involving him.
