Continuano le avventure del cavaliere Maynard de Rocheblanche alla scoperta dei segreti del “Lapis exilii” e della morte del monaco Facio di Malaspina.
Per far luce sulla vicenda, Maynard deve accedere alla corte estense e guadagnarsi la fiducia del marchese Obizzo, signore di Ferrara. Intanto, nella vicina abbazia di Pomposa, l’abate Andrea assiste impotente alla fuga del suo protetto, il giovane miniaturista Gualtiero de’ Bruni, diretto ad Avignone con la speranza di ritrovare la madre.
Ma l’inaspettato dilagare della peste nera sconvolge tutti i piani.

The adventures of Knight Maynard de Rocheblanche continue as he uncovers the secrets of the “Lapis exilii” and the death of the monk Facio di Malaspina.
To shed light on the matter, Maynard must gain access to the Este court and earn the trust of Marquis Obizzo, lord of Ferrara. Meanwhile, at the nearby Pomposa Abbey, Abbot Andrea watches helplessly as his protégé, the young miniaturist Gualtiero de’ Bruni, flees to Avignon in hopes of finding his mother.
But the unexpected spread of the Black Plague disrupts all plans.
