È l’agosto del 1346, quando il valoroso Maynard de Rocheblanche, sopravvissuto a una disfatta militare, entra in possesso di una pergamena con un enigma vergato. Quell’oscuro testo fa riferimento a una reliquia preziosa, avvolta nel mistero, il Lapis exilii.
Sono molti coloro che hanno interesse a impossessarsene, primi fra tutti un ambizioso cardinale di Avignone e il principe Karel di Lussemburgo, desideroso di farsi incoronare imperatore. Per non far cadere l’inestimabile documento in mani sbagliate, Maynard sarà costretto a fuggire.
Si recherà prima a Reims, presso la sorella Eudeline, badessa del convento di Sainte-Balsamie, poi nell’abbazia di Pomposa. It is August 1346, when the valiant Maynard de Rocheblanche, having survived a military defeat, comes into possession of a parchment inscribed with a riddle. That obscure text refers to a precious relic, shrouded in mystery, the Lapis exilii.
Many are interested in obtaining it, foremost among them an ambitious cardinal from Avignon and Prince Karel of Luxembourg, eager to crown himself emperor. To prevent the priceless document from falling into the wrong hands, Maynard will be forced to flee.
He will first travel to Reims, to his sister Eudeline, abbess of the convent of Sainte-Balsamie, and then to the abbey of Pomposa. It is there that a fortunate encounter will take place with Abbot Andrea and the young painter Gualtiero de’ Bruni, with whom he will try to uncover the truth about the relic.
